Fredericksburg's German settlers built with what the land gave them: limestone, cedar and hand-hewn timber. Many of those 1800s homes still stand within a few blocks of Main Street, and they are some of the most sought-after properties in town.
What makes them special
Thick limestone walls, original wood floors, antique doors and deep porches. Many lots include outbuildings, wells, or a newer guest house built to look like an old barn. You can walk to dinner, the shops and the tasting rooms.
What to know before you buy
- Historic review. Exterior changes in the historic district typically go through the city's historic review process. Plan renovations with that in mind.
- Inspections matter. Old foundations, plumbing and electrical deserve a careful inspection by someone who knows historic construction.
- Rental questions. Not every historic home has an STR permit. Some may qualify through the city's process. Ask early.
